Daniel Townes

Daniel TownesOK here is a brief rundown of why I do comedy and how it all came to be.

Basically me and this comedy thing started off from the suggestion of a good friend from high school. He said I should try it, I contemplated it for about two years and eventually got the guts to have a go. Things kind of snowballed from there and it is now 3.5years later. It is probably the most exciting thing I've ever done with my life. There is nothing better for me than making people laugh - I never thought I'd be able live off it.

And that's pretty much the whole story - short and sweet and it all happened by accident. I never wanted to be a Comedian, it was nothing that I'd ever even thought about until my mate suggested it to me. To start with it was just me being 22 and not knowing what I was doing with my life, I just thought "yeah ill have a crack at that. Maybe. One day."

Now I'm 26 and it is my full time job. I left my other job six months ago to pursue this. I am based in Sydney Australia.

Anyway, enough of that boring story. Below is a list of things I've done since starting out in this industry. It is by no means everything just some of the more memorable ones.

Ian Cognito

Ian Cognitowww.iancognito.net

After 17 years in the business we call show, Ian Cognito knows one thing: you need two things to make it big - hype and bullshit.  Ian Cognito has neither.  He has become one of the most respected comedians in the world by simply consistently doing great performances.

That he is so remarkably unfamous can be put down to one thing: Ian Cognito has never been on television in any shape or form.  If Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider and became, like, a spider, then Ian Cognito was bitten by a radioactive cunt.

“The trouble with a moustache is that you can taste what you've been eating. I got fed up of mine tasting of TV producers arseholes.” Ian Cognito

Possibly one of the most influential comedians of modern times Ian Cognito has been responsible for the shape of the careers of many comedians.  Some of which he is pleased about.

“Changed the face of this circuit single handedly. He was rallying against political correctness before it even had a name. I also love it when he pisses in my mouth .” Brendan Burns

“He's the reason I am in this business.” Boothby Graffoe

Some not so pleased.

Ian Cognito has headlined some of the best line ups in British comedy putting many established performers in the shade. However, the longer you spend in the comedy arena, the more people you will upset, particularly if you take the risks that Ian takes.

Consequently Ian Cognito appears to be banned from more comedy clubs than any other British comedian.  Ian Cognito is not proud of this. The comedy business should be ashamed.

So, funny, challenging, honest and he gets it right 98.5per cent of the time (and of course he's got his awards).  Ian Cognito.  He's the real thing.

“It's not a widely known fact that I sign my name Ian D.Cognito, it's an anagram of gin and tonic , and the D stands for Danger.”

Ivan Brackenbury

(AKA Tom Binns)

Ivan BrackenburyTom cut his teeth in comedy at the Comedy Café in London and on the BBC Radio Comedy Network. His first television appearances were in 'Knowing Me Knowing Yule with Alan Partridge', 'Friday Night Armistice' and 'Fist of Fun'.

One of the sketches Tom wrote for 'Trigger Happy TV' made it into both the BBC and Channel 4 polls for best comedy moment and TV moment of 2001.

In 2002 while Tom was presenting 'Ri:se' the live breakfast show on Channel 4, readers of More magazine voted him the 25th sexiest man in the world, leaving George Clooney trailing behind at number 33.

Joan Rivers recently worked with Tom when he hosted a very expensive pilot episode of 'Celebrity Squares' for So TV and Five.

Tom is currently writing a sitcom, DJing on BRMB radio, developing TV shows, performing stand-up and sailing catamarans

Mick Ferry

Mick FerryAwesome stand up” - BBC

Best Stand Up on the North West Comedy Circuit 2006 Nominee

Tune in every Saturday & Sunday between 10 - 2pm to hear Mick`s radio show "The Weekend Shambles" on The North West`s Revolution 92.6.

Manchester based Mick Ferry is renowned as a fine purveyor of lugubrious surrealism and has quickly established himself as one of the most sought after comics on the British and International comedy circuit. One of the finest comperes around, at ease bantering with a crowd but with no shortage of first class dark and sinister material, Mick performs regularly at The Comedy Store in London and Manchester as well as headlining at comedy venues nationwide. Internationally he has recently appeared in Ireland , Dubai , Singapore , and Shanghai where he has showcased his ability to pluck outstanding material from thin air in an apparently effortless manner.

Mick began his assault on the stand-up circuit in 1998 and quickly made it to the finals of Channel 4's esteemed ‘So You Think You're Funny' competition. His stand up career has gone from strength to strength and he is now widely recognised as one of the most talented and promising stand-ups to have emerged from the North. Testament to this fact, he has been invited to perform alongside stand-up luminaries Johnny Vegas, Sean Lock, Peter Kay, Al Murray and Steve Coogan – having the honour of joining each of them as a special guest on live shows.

Back in the early days of his career Mick formed one third of the bizarre comedy trio Dr Strangehair. Performing zany sketches and offbeat humour littered with pop culture references the trio were soon spotted by ‘Mercury Prize Winner' Badly Drawn Boy and invited to accompany him on a sell out nationwide tour. It was a short lived venture; the world of rock-and-roll soon took its toll on the trio and they split soon after to focus on their individual comedy careers.

For Mick there was no looking back. He has gone on to develop a cult following in his native North West and performed his debut one man show ‘Mick Ferry's Won F*&K All!' to a sell out audience and great critical acclaim at the Manchester Comedy Festival in 2004. In the same year, he also appeared at the Edinburgh Festival as part of the highly regarded ‘Big Value Comedy Show'.

A supremely talented and versatile performer, Mick was also a founder member of The Comedy Store's weekly topical team show ‘M.E.N At Work'. In the furiously paced show based on the week's news, Mick continued to hone his talent for off-the-cuff, satirical and topical comedy, generating new and original material every single week and wowing audiences with his spontaneous acerbic outbursts and razor sharp wit.

Recognising his talent as a prolific comedy writer and emerging talent, Mick was one of only a handful of Artistes to be awarded a writers bursary by the BBC in 2004. He then went on to write and perform a pilot for Radio 4; a sketch show entitled 'Turn Left at the Pier' based in the glitzy showbiz world of Blackpool . Also on the airwaves, Mick's quick witted banter can be heard regularly on BBC Radio GMR where he's a regular guest contributor. Other radio credits include BBC7's ‘Brand Spanking New' Comedy Show.

TV credits include a live stand-up performance on Paramount 's ‘The Comedy Store' , BBC 2's ‘Running Late' , Comedy Central/Paramount Comedy's ‘The World Stands up' and Paramount 's ‘Comedy Blue'. Mick recently made his acting debut in ‘Fire Salad' – a play written by Tony Burgess and performed at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester .

Recently Mick joined the North West`s Revolution 92.6 radio station to present his own show “The Weekend Shambles" and to top off a great year for Mick he has been nominated for the Best Stand Up on the North West Comedy Circuit 2006 at the North West Comedy Awards.

Things look like they are only going to get better for Derker's most famous son…

Otis Cannelloni

Otis CannelloniMadness, mime, magic & mirth

Otiz Cannelloni combines the illusion of magic and the logic of stand-up to produce a hybrid comic creation. With a mind more suited to testing crash helmets his performance fluctuates between sheer genius and downright stupidity.

Just when you suspect he doesn't have a clue, he removes all doubt. When Cannelloni is on stage the dressing room empties, as the rest of the comics rush to watch and learn from his mistakes. It's taken years of practice to make something so simple look so difficult.

Despite various television appearances, The Stand Up Show BBC1, Stuff the White Rabbit, BBC 2, producers are prepared to forgive and forget, mostly forget. Still there are always the cruise liners.

Otiz is a popular choice for the corporate market. His laid back brand of mirth has proved a hit at a variety of occasions.

Steve Hughes

Steve HughesYearning for a career where men want to be you and women want to have sex with you, Steve Hughes spent his formative years in Australia as heavy metal drummer. After ten years of recording and touring Steve gave up his job as a drummer and decided to start talking to the audience.

Heavy Rock bands Slaughter Lord, Mortal Sin, Nazxul, and Primordial's losses are the comedy world's gain.

Steve is now widely regarded one of the most esteemed and exciting stand up comedians working on the UK and International circuit. With a laconic and deceptively laid back style, Steve's musings on life and the universe are far reaching. A chain smoking, beer swilling, plain talking Australian, Steve's comfortable operating in the realms of such familiar subjects as drugs, sex, and pornos but his real passion is the topical, political and intellectual – delivered in a frequently provocative manner. Operating on many levels Steve's eloquently argued points are always passionate and delivered with blistering conviction.

His eclectic mix of quirky anecdotes and witty one-liners has earned him legions of fans across the U.K., as well as recent performances on BBC2's “ The Live Floor Show,” Paramount's “ The Comedy Store” and Comedy Central's “ The World Stands Up!”. He has appeared all over Australia, won the first ever Green Faces Comedy Competition 1997, appeared on Channel 9's footy show, Won Australian Comedian of the year 1998, hosted MTV in Australia, appeared at almost every international comedy festival in the world and even supported Mr Methane on tour.

Chatting with the casual confidence of a comic at home in front of a crowd Steve Hughes' acute observations on British life are packed with conviction and passion about stuff that really matters to him.

Steve's philosophy - The idea of multiculturalism is meaningless, when there is in reality only one culture: ‘People'

Press

One of the best hours of stand up at the fringe…acutely observed and cutting bone-deep. Steve delves into gutsier territory – racism, terrorism, homophobia – with an honesty and openness rarely seen among comics. His insights are spot-on, his opinions are intelligent and his jokes are top class .” – The Guardian

Mark Thomas and Rob Newman have proven how effective comedy can be as a mouthpiece for such issues. Hughes knocks them into a cocked hat. In summary: Hughes is gold .” – Metro

After an ingenious segment in which he proves with absolutely faultless logic that gay men are straighter than straight men, he chuckles as some bemused looks in the audience and says: “just getting your minds nice and wet for later on – this is going to get wacked.” And wacked it gets. Hughes launches into an absolutely withering demolition of the thinking behind the War on Terror. He's not the first comedian to tackle this subject by any means, but I've never heard it chewed over with such devastating rigour .” – The Scotsman

Invigorating…his bullshit-free take on the world is compelling and pungent ”. – Edinburgh Guide

This is exactly what political comedy should be intelligent, provocative, profound, and topped off with good, solid gags. See him while it's still legal .” – Chortle

You get the feeling Steve Hughes is on the cusp of greatness. The re is also the feeling that, if said greatness was achieved, he would probably tell it to f**k off. You will not see a more hilarious and passionate act at any festival .” – Hairline.org.uk

A laconic, and laid back performer, Hughes' quietly confident persona demonstrates a man at ease with his material. Think Boothby Graffoe…only Australian. Beneath the easy-going exterior, though, there's fine comic work being done, as Hughes tosses out elegant gags by the bucketload…a charming delivery ” – Chortle

Steve Hughes will rock your world ” – Three Weeks
